The Park Pub, Bedford

Cocktail Bar | Bedford | England | United Kingdom

"The Park Pub, Bedford" is a stylish cocktail bar and pub located in Bedford, England, near Bedford Park. It belongs to the Wells & Co. group, a regional company with a long brewing tradition, and is a popular gathering place for locals and visitors alike. The building itself dates back to the early 1900s and has been lovingly renovated, preserving historical elements such as fireplaces, tiled floors, and wooden beams. This combination of traditional charm and modern comfort creates an inviting atmosphere often described as a "proper pub" – a place that blends classic British pub culture with contemporary amenities.

The interior of "The Park Pub" is designed to be versatile, offering different areas for various moods. There is an elegant, cozy restaurant with a fireplace, a relaxed bar area with a wood fire, a bright conservatory, and a so-called garden room that leads directly into an urban courtyard garden. This outdoor space is particularly popular in the summer, when guests can enjoy the sun with a cool drink in hand. The decor is stylish and comfortable, with a focus on functionality and well-being. The pub is also dog-friendly, welcoming four-legged companions in the bar area and garden, making it an ideal spot for walkers from the nearby park.

The drink menu is extensive and highlights regional connections. There is a selection of real ales and craft beers, including the latest creations from Brewpoint, Wells & Co.'s in-house brewery. In addition to beers, the bar offers a comprehensive list of gins and spirits, as well as a wide range of non-alcoholic beverages. While the cocktail menu is not the main feature, it is solid and affordable, featuring classics that complement the relaxed ambiance. The culinary offerings place a strong emphasis on local suppliers and fresh, seasonal ingredients. The menu includes modern interpretations of British pub classics like Brewpoint beer-battered fish and chips, as well as light snacks for the bar area and Sunday roasts featuring beef, pork belly, or chicken – or a combination of all three. The quality is often praised, although some guests find the service slow on busy days.

The clientele is diverse: families, friends, couples, and solo visitors use the pub for various occasions, from casual meet-ups to special celebrations. It is also suitable for events, with private areas available for rent for 30 to 120 guests, offering tailored packages for parties or business occasions. Service is generally described as friendly and attentive, with individual staff members like Ellie, Alex, or Zoe being highlighted by guests for their helpfulness. However, there is occasional criticism regarding longer wait times, untrained staff, or minor issues like unhygienic cutlery – particularly during peak times, such as events in the park.

"The Park Pub, Bedford" is not an exclusive cocktail bar focused on avant-garde mixology, but rather a versatile pub with cocktail options that stands out due to its location, historic character, and good value for money. It offers a place to relax and enjoy, whether after a walk in the park or as a meeting spot for an evening with friends. For visitors seeking authentic British pub culture with a touch of modernity, it is a reliable choice in Bedford.

A decent pup, quite large, with parking. Quite an old building, earlier than the surrounding housing.

We booked for a Boxing Day lunch for a group of 8 and sadly it’ll likely be our last visit to the pub. Service was incredibly slow other than one waitress who was very helpful (sadly I didn’t get her name) and food / drinks took ages to arrive. Yet again, the ‘pie of the day’ was unavailable which is incredibly disappointing given our reservation was at 1pm. We requested a copy of the menu in advance of our reservation but only the link to the website was provided so given it was Boxing Day, we assumed the festive menu would be running - this wasn’t the case disappointedly and only their normal menu was available (perhaps this should be specified given the festive period). One of the guests ordered the sausage roll as a starter but it wasn’t “quite ready” at the same time as the others, when it eventually arrived (after we had all finished ours), it was still frozen in the middle so was inedible! The rest of the table ordered moules but these were tepid at best. Considering this is seen as a gastropub, this visit left a lot to be desired with the food and service.

Once again we enjoyed some excellent food. The service was a bit slow due to the amount of customers not the staff who were running around trying to keep everyone happy

Came here for the first time on Sunday for a roast. We had tried to book the Roast and Dessert deal, but the website didn't give any date options, so I booked for dinner and put notes that we wanted the deal. When we arrived, they said they didn't have us down for the roast deal. A bit disappointing, but not a massive issue. We all ordered chicken roasts, which were lovely, with a giant Yorkshire. The roast pork bites from the Nibbles menu were AMAZING. Ordered the mini dessert and a hot drink, but my espresso came out a lot earlier and the brownie that came out was absolutely tiny, so not worth it for me. Cheesecake, brownie and creme brulee also ordered and all nice. Quite loud in there, but it was a busy Sunday. They also took Blue Light Card which is nice. Would probably return again to try other menus.

The food was expensive but disappointing . The chips were what you’d expect at McDonald’s not in a restaurant the gammon loin chops were extremely salty and were not eaten . It was very busy and only had one person on the bar and two young people doing everything else. They had no knowledge of the day’s specials and had to go and find out . Obviously no customer service training had been carried out. Not once did they ask if everything was ok or say thank you. I informed them I had a £5 voucher I was sent online but was told it wasn’t showing so I gave up. Will not be going there again.
